When you are contemplating separation or navigating divorce, it can be difficult to know what your financial life might look like afterward.
Can you afford to keep the home? What would a separate household cost? How might different financial arrangements affect your daily life and your plans for retirement?
You deserve time to understand those questions before making decisions.
Empowered Separation provides individual divorce financial planning for men and women who want a clearer understanding of their finances and thoughtful preparation for the conversations ahead.
You can work with me independently. Your spouse does not need to participate.
You may have managed your household finances for years, or you may be looking closely at them for the first time. Either way, divorce introduces questions that go beyond knowing your account balances.
Individual financial planning may be right for you if you are:
You do not need to have everything organized before reaching out.
HOW WE WORK TOGETHER:
I help you organize the available information, understand how the financial pieces connect, and examine the choices in front of you.
Depending on the scope of our engagement, our work may include:
Understanding Your Financial Picture
Reviewing income, expenses, assets, and debts to establish a clearer starting point and identify information that may still be missing.
Exploring Housing and Cash Flow
Looking beyond the mortgage payment to consider household costs, other obligations, and the income available to meet them.
Comparing Financial Scenarios
Examining how different approaches to dividing assets and debts, or different support assumptions, could affect your finances over time.
Considering Retirement Accounts and Benefits
Understanding how retirement assets and pension benefits fit into the broader financial picture and identifying questions for the appropriate professionals.
Preparing for Important Conversations
Organizing your financial questions and concerns so you can participate more thoughtfully in discussions with your attorney, mediator, or other professionals.
The goal is to help you understand what a financial choice could mean for your life—not simply what it looks like on paper.
WORKING WITH JESSICA
Our work begins with what matters to you: your priorities, your primary financial concern, and how you envision life after divorce.
A consultation gives us an opportunity to discuss your circumstances and determine whether my services are a good fit. Detailed document review and financial analysis take place within a paid engagement.
Before we begin, you will receive a written scope outlining the financial questions we will address, the information needed, the sessions and deliverables included, the fee, and the timeline.
Some situations call for focused work around one financial issue. Others require a broader review of several connected decisions. We will define the appropriate scope before moving forward.
INDIVIDUAL SUPPORT AND MEDIATION SERVICES ARE DIFFERENT
In an individual engagement, I work with you to help you understand your financial circumstances and prepare for your decisions. I am not serving as a neutral mediator for you and your spouse.
Couples mediation is a separate service in which I work neutrally with both participants. If you are seeking help together, please explore our mediation services.
Individual financial planning does not include negotiating with your spouse or preparing a Memorandum of Understanding.
I’m Jessica M. Garcia, MBA, CDFA®, founder of Empowered Separation.
My work draws on more than two decades in banking and years of helping people navigate the financial questions that arise during separation and divorce.
I bring careful analysis, practical perspective, and space for you to ask questions without feeling that you should already know the answers.
My services provide financial education, analysis, and planning related to separation and divorce. I do not provide legal, tax, or investment advice, manage investments, or replace your attorney or other professional advisers.
